Toyota Prius Recall: Your Next Steps
Toyota is recalling approximately 23,125 Prius Hybrids in Canada due to a possible software defect that could lead to vehicle stalling.
Toyota is recalling roughly 2.43 million vehicles globally due to a software glitch that may prevent the vehicle’s fail-safe mode to work in the event of a hybrid system fault. There is a chance that the vehicle could stall in the event that a hybrid system faulted. Although the steering and braking would not be affected, Toyota states that a vehicle in higher speed may have an increased risk of getting into an accident. Vehicles affected in this recall are 2010 to 2014 Prius Hybrids, as well as select 2012 to 2014 Prius V Hybrids.
Of the affected vehicles, 830,000 are in North America with approximately 23,125 in Canada. Vehicles are also being recalled in Japan, China, Europe, and other regions. This is one of Toyota’s largest recalls aside from the Takata Corporation’s ongoing airbag recall. Although Toyota says there have been no accidents or injuries reported, there have been three reports from Japan regarding operational problems related to the defected vehicles.
This is Toyota’s second Prius recall this month. The previous recall affected approximately 1 million vehicles globally and 7,200 vehicles in Canada due to a risk of fire coming from the hybrid vehicle’s Power Control Unit.
Customers with affected vehicles will be notified from Toyota via mail about the details for vehicle repair. Toyota dealers will fix the software glitch at no cost. To learn more about this recall, visit Toyota Canada’s website.
