Honda Rear Camera Display and Takata Recall: Your Next Steps
Honda Motor Co. is recalling 2018 Honda Accord and 2019 Honda Insight vehicles due to a rear camera display malfunction as well 1.4 million more vehicles for Takata air bag replacements.
Honda Motor Co. is recalling 14,521 vehicles in Canada due to a rear camera display malfunction in 2018 Honda Accord and 2019 Honda Insight vehicles. In 2016, after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued an official statement that all vehicles weighing under 4,536 kg are required to have a backup camera, Canada also decided that rear camera displays must follow certain regulations in order to provide drivers with a view that prevents the risk of a crash. Statistics by Transport Canada show that between 2004 and 2009, 27 people lost their lives and approximately 1,500 were injured due to vehicle reversing accidents.
Affected vehicles may not show the entire rear view image on the centre display of the camera, which does not comply with the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 – Mirrors and Rear Visibility Standards requirements. The Tokyo-based automaker has reported no accidents or injuries related to the recall, however vehicles with affected rear camera displays should visit their local Honda dealer to have the software reinstalled at no charge. Not doing so immediately may result in an increased risk of a crash, property damage or injury.
Honda Motor Co. has also added 1.4 million vehicles to its list of pickup trucks, SUVs and cars that will need Takata airbag replacements in the U.S. Initially issued in 2013 by the Takata Corporation, this ongoing recall has affected over 37 million vehicles across the U.S. and was the largest recall in American history. Vehicles with Takata airbags that have been exposed to high heat and humidity may result in an explosion, increasing the risk of a serious injury to drivers if not replaced. Honda Motor Co. is ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s government-mandated schedule to replace impacted Takata airbags. Drivers with vehicles that have Takata airbags should visit Honda’s airbag inflator recall centre online to learn more.
