Ford’s SUV & Crossover Lineup: All 8 Models Previewed

The bad news? Ford is getting out of the car business. The good news? The Blue Oval is ramping up its SUV and crossover lineup, including new models like the all-electric Mustang Mach-E and trio of rugged Broncos.

So, if you're considering a Ford SUV, here are the 8 models you need to know about.

Ecosport

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 2.0L
  • Performance: Up to 166 horsepower and 149 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 600 litres/21 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: 5

In case you couldn’t guess by its name, Ford’s EcoSport is supposed to combine economic fuel consumption and sporty driving capabilities. It was built to compete in the subcompact SUV space alongside the Nissan Rogue and Hyundai Kona. For the base model, the fuel economy is rated at 8L and 10.2L per 100 kilometres respectively for city and highway driving.

Newer 2022 models feature all-wheel drive across all trims, plus some nice driver assist safety features like BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert, which uses radar detection to alert potential hazards.

The bad news for the EcoSport is that the 2022 model is likely the last. Ford announced recently it would end all production of its vehicles built in India, including the EcoSport crossover SUV.

Escape

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 2.0L (Standard) or 2.5L (Hybrid)
  • Performance: Up to 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 1,851 litres/65.4 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: 5

Out of Ford’s extensive portfolio of crossovers and SUVs, the popular Escape stands out for a few reasons. First of which is its extensive selection of powertrains, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions that consist of a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that can produce 221 horsepower. Read our full Escape Hybrid review here.

The gasoline models start at a 1.5L three-cylinder engine and go up to a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 250 horsepower able to hit 0-60 in under 6 seconds. The other compelling case for the Escape is its cargo space behind the rear seats, which can fit up to 8 carry-on suitcases. That’s ample room for the weekend getaway or picking up friends at the airport. Its interior is a basic cloth upholstery, but you can upgrade to faux leather on higher level trims.

Bronco Sport

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 1.5L (base) or 2.0L Turbo
  • Performance: Up to 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 1,846 litres/65.2 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: 5

Despite its diminutive size compared to the full-size Bronco, the Sport edition punches above its weight when it comes to off-road adventure. This compact crossover SUV features plenty of trail-blazing features like off-road-tuned underpinnings, 8.8-inch ground clearance on the Sport Badlands model we reviewed here, water-fording capabilities, and a safari-style roof that provides storage space for bikes and other gear.

Each model comes with 4x4 capabilities like G.O.A.T. Mode – Goes Over Any Type of Terrain – and a H.O.S.S. (High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension) system to maintain vehicle composure in rugged terrain. This is not exactly your dad’s Bronco from yesteryear. Although the heritage-inspired one-piece front grille does slightly resemble past iconic models.

Edge

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 2.0L Turbo
  • Performance: Up to 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 2,067 litres/73 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: 5

Those wanting a medium-sized SUV crossover with more performance power might find what they’re looking for in the Ford Edge. The base model boasts a 250-horsepower turbocharged engine, but if you opt for the Edge ST trim there is a 335-horsepower twin-turbo 2.7L available. That will easily keep pace with most zippy cars in the city.

Another standout feature for the Edge 2022 model is a 12-inch screen on the centre console. This is where you can get all the latest connectivity options, like voice recognition, that will sync up with your smartphone to create a seamless infotainment experience, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

As for the weekend getaways, all Edge trims come with Intelligent All Wheel Drive and over 2,110 litres in cargo space with the rear seats folded.

Bronco (2- and 4-door)

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 2.3L or 2.7L
  • Performance: Up to 330 horsepower and 415 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 2,803 litres/99 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: 4

It would take a lot to knock the Jeep Wrangler off its throne as king of the off-road vehicles, but Ford’s revamped Bronco has the kicking power to do just that. Ford’s hit SUV delivers exceptional trail-chomping cred with a plethora of “Built Wild” features, such as the unique breakover angles that help handle sharp drops and steep inclines – 37.2 degrees for the 2-door and 37 degrees for the 4-door.

There’s also the H.O.S.S. (High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension) system on all packages that keep your Bronco firmly planted on the ground in rugged terrain. If you want to really enjoy summer driving, only the 4-door Bronco offers a soft-top that can be removed to let in the rays. The 4-door also has a special tilting feature for easy access to the rear cargo.

Explorer

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 2.3L or 3.0L
  • Performance: Up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 2,486 litres/87.8 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: Up to 7

Despite its name, the Explorer is probably an unlikely candidate among Ford’s vast lineup of SUVs and crossovers to be built for rugged off-road exploring. The mid-size Explorer is in fact a great family vehicle with ample storage and seating capacity (up to 7 passengers) for toting the kids to school and weekend soccer tournaments. Here are some of our favourite 7-seater SUVs in Canada.

The base 300 horsepower 2.3L engine should be sufficient for parents not looking to earn any pricey speeding tickets, while those with a need to zoom can get the Platinum or ST models – all featuring a 400-horsepower twin turbo 3.0L engine.

Ford’s Co-Pilot360 is available on the Explorer, offering a suite of standard driver assist technologies to improve safety. Its Twin-Panel Moonroof offers an open-air experience for the first and second row seating.

Mustang Mach-E

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 70.0-kWh battery (standard) or 91.0-kWh (extended-range)
  • Performance: Up to 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 1,690 litres/59.7 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: 5

Many were left scratching their heads when Ford named a crossover SUV, the Mach-E, as a next chapter in the storied Mustang lineage. And fully electric no less! What happened to the gas-guzzling, engine-rumbling hot rods of the past? If nothing else the Mach-E delivers on classic Mustang speed, with the sportiest version (GT Performance Edition) hitting zero to 100 kilometres in under 3.7 seconds.

Its range is similarly impressive with up 481 kilometres on a single charge, plus up to 80% battery charging in 45 minutes using DC Fast Charge Stations. One of the more innovative elements to the Mach-E will be the Ford BlueCruise – a technology that allows you to operate the vehicle hands-free in designated highway lanes across North America.

And don’t worry, the vehicle is equipped with a driver facing camera to ensure you keep your eyes on the road and not relax too much.

Expedition

Key specs:

  • Available engine: 3.5L or 3.7L
  • Performance: Up to 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft. of torque
  • Cargo space: Up to 2,944 litres/104.6 cu. ft. (with rear seats folded)
  • Number of passengers: Up to 8

Weighing in as the heavyweight of Ford’s SUV lineup, the Expedition is a full-size vehicle built for those family haulers who need ample seating, plenty of storage capacity, and some off-road capabilities. One of the big upgrades to the 2022 Expedition is a 12-inch touchscreen for standard models and an eye-popping 15.5-inch portrait-orientated version on upper-end trims.

The Expedition will certainly have power to match its size, with a 3.5L engine producing 440 available horsepower and 510 lb-ft. of torque. It can also tow up to 9,200 pounds (4,173 kilograms) when equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package. That should appeal to those who pull boats and RVs around on family road trips.

If you’re inclined to off-road excursions, the all-new Timberline edition offers a host of adventure-ready features, including Trail Control technology, Trail Turn Assist, and 32” all-terrain tires.
