2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Range & Specs: VW's First Mass-Market EV
The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 marks the German automaker’s official first step towards the electrification of its fleet in North America. Although the Volkswagen e-Golf did resoundingly well in some Canadian Provinces, its limited range and size were not ideal for all typically active families.
The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 marks the German automaker’s official first step towards the electrification of its fleet in North America. Although the Volkswagen e-Golf did resoundingly well in some Canadian Provinces, its limited range and size were not ideal for all typically active families.
Enter the compact ID.4 and its promise to deliver space, efficiency, safety, without ever requiring a drop of fuel. The ID.4 is the first Volkswagen EV to be commercialised on the company’s MEB EV-dedicated platform that will be sold in Canada.
The fact that SUVs have overtaken conventional cars in sales in the country explains why it is the first all-new and all-electric vehicle Volkswagen will bring to our market. More, including the anticipated return of the microbus, the Buzz, are on the way.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is currently assembled in Germany but before the end of 2022, Canadian units will be leaving the automaker’s freshly retooled Chattanooga, TN plant.
How long will it take to charge VW’s all-electric compact crossover?
When they arrive in showrooms, all 2022 model year Volkswagen ID.4 will feature a lithium-ion battery pack with an 82-kW gross capacity. The net usable 77-kW will enable the single-motor RWD models to travel up to 400 km on a full charge. The optional dual-motor configuration mildly impacts range as the AWD ID.4 will travel an estimated 386 km between full charges.
Every version of the Volkswagen ID.4 is equipped with a CCS (Combined Charging System) socket. On a Level 1 home outlet charger using the provided cable, the ID.4 will gain about 5 km of range per hour. The best way to make use of the ID.4’s included 11-kW onboard charger at home is setting up a Level 2 charger on 240v of power. Plugged in, the ID.4 will reach a full state of charge in under eight hours, or overnight.
Expect improved range & charging times with the updated 2022 ID.4

On a Level 3 fast charger, the ID.4 will add about 100 km of range every 10 minutes. This works out to going from a 5% to an 80% state of charge in roughly 38 minutes. Included with the purchase of a new ID.4, Volkswagen Canada will include three years of unlimited DC Fast Charging sessions at Electrify Canada chargers at no additional cost.
The base ID.4 versions with the single rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor offer 201 horsepower and 229 lb.-ft. of torque. With the addition of a front asynchronous electric motor, the ID.4’s total system output increases to 295 horsepower and 339 lb.-ft. of torque.
ID.4 Pro offers more performance and better features for Canadian winters
Among the many advantages associated with electric vehicles, performance comes out at or near the top. The attractive 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro, when fitted with the optional front electric motor, can reach 96 km/h from a standstill in only 5.4 seconds.
Other than the possibility of configuring the ID.4 with a single electric motor or a pair, it is offered in two distinct versions. The base Pro iteration includes a heat pump, a heated windshield, a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, heated front seats, wireless App-Connect smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital driver display, a 10-inch touchscreen display with navigation, and much more.
