Toyota Corolla & Matrix Models Recalled Re: Airbags in Canada: Who's Affected & Next Steps

Toyota has issued a recall, affecting 55,399 vehicles in Canada, specifically the model year 2003-04 Corolla and 2005-08 Matrix. The automaker confirmed a problem with airbags that may not inflate properly.

On August 28, 2019, Toyota issued a recall for 2003-04 Corolla and 2005-08 Matrix vehicles.

The automaker said the front passenger airbag had previously been repaired in these vehicles, but it may sustain damage when deployed, leading to potential injury in the event a crash occurs. Those replaced airbags were from the prior Takata recall that affected 1.7 million vehicles in North America. Toyota said the problem is particularly risky in higher temperatures, where the replacement bags might not unfold effectively, raising the chance of getting hurt in a collision.

Who’s Affected?

No crashes or injuries related to the defect have been reported.

The recall affects 191,000 Corolla and Matrix models in the United States and Japan, with 55,399 of those vehicles in Canada.

It affects certain vehicles in the model year 2003-04 Corolla and 2005-08 Matrix where Toyota previously replaced airbags manufactured by Takata. Vehicles that weren’t repaired in that recall are not involved in this one, as only specific remedy parts under the Takata recall are affected.

What Should You Do?

Toyota will notify owners by first class mail by the end of October with instructions on taking their vehicle to a dealer for repair. Dealers will replace the front passenger airbag assembly with an improved one at no cost to customers.
