Nissan Recalls Over 18,000 Vehicles Due to an Airbag Problem

Nissan has issued a recall affecting over 18,000 vehicles in Canada because of faulty Takata airbags that may either deploy prematurely or not at all.

Date of recall: March 31, 2020

What vehicles are affected?

This recall covers different models, 18,553 of which are affected in Canada, plus another 250,000 in the United States. The units affected are:

  • 2012-17 Nissan NV
  • 2013-15 Nissan Titan
  • 2013-15 Nissan Titan

The recall also applies to the 2011-12 Inifiniti QX56, which Nissan has included with the others.

What’s the problem?

All of these models may have defective airbags on the driver side that could deploy too forcefully. That raises the possibility the inflator could rupture exposing occupants to fragments and shrapnel in the event of a crash. The rupture may also impede the airbag from inflating properly.

The airbags were manufactured with ammonium nitrate that is offset by a chemical that absorbs the moisture to help them deploy safely and efficiently. Takata was found to have put too much of the ammonium nitrate propellant inside in the manufacturing process, which is at the centre of this particular recall.

Nissan hasn’t reported any specific incidents or injuries related to the defect in these models, but to date, 25 people were killed worldwide by shrapnel, plus another 300 injured by the defect.

What’s the fix?

Nissan will replace the airbag inflator or module with one made by a different company. The repair and replacement will be done free of charge.
