Kia Recalls Over 58,000 Models in Canada

Kia has issued a recall affecting over 58,000 vehicles in Canada because of a defect in the airbag control unit.

Date of recall: January 31, 2022

Vehicles affected: This recall affects 58,053 vehicles in Canada, plus 410,619 in the United States. All of the affected vehicles fall under these models:

  • 2017-18 Forte
  • 2017-18 Forte Koup
  • 2017-19 Sedona
  • 2017-19 Soul
  • 2017-19 Soul EV

What’s the problem?

A defect in the airbag control unit cover could come into contact with the circuit board to cause a malfunction. That means that the airbag system might not deploy and inflate when a crash happens. Some affected vehicles may have an airbag warning light appear in the dash to indicate the problem.

Kia hasn’t reported any incidents for any of the vehicles affected.

What’s the fix?

Dealers will inspect the airbag control unit and take one of two courses of action. If the airbag warning light is on, they will install a replacement airbag control unit to rectify the issue. If the warning light is not on, then dealers will update the software to reconfigure the existing control unit to ensure airbags will deploy in the event of a crash.

What do you do?

Kia will notify affected owners by mail with instructions on where to take their vehicles in for repair.
