Hyundai and Kia Recall: Your Next Steps

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia are recalling approximately 2,000 IONIQ 2017 and 2018 hybrid, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and Niro crossovers in Canada.

Kia and Hyundai Motor Company have issued separate recalls with the same defect involving a fire risk that could occur under the affected vehicles rear seats. Approximately 2,000 IONIQ 2017 and 2018 hybrid, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and Niro crossovers are being recalled in Canada due to an inadequate connection to the power relay assembly, which could increase the risk of electric resistance and potentially lead to a fire.

Hyundai is recalling 754 IONIQ hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles and Kia is recalling 1,039 Niro crossovers. Both automakers said that drivers with affected vehicles may see the high-energy visible light (HEV) illuminate to signal a malfunction while driving and or the vehicle won’t turn on. According to Automotive News Canada, approximately 4,796 IONIQ hybrid, plug-in hybrid vehicles and Niro crossovers have been sold through September 2018.

Both Hyundai and Kia dealers will check affected vehicles for signs of heat damage. If damage is found, dealers will replace the power relay assembly and if no damage is found, dealers will replace the main relay at no charge to drivers. Visit Kia Canada or Hyundai Canada to learn more about the recall and to see if your vehicle is affected.
