Honda Recall 130,000 Vehicles Over Drive Shaft & Software Issues

Honda has issued two concurrent recalls affecting 130,000 vehicles in Canada because of faulty drive shafts and a software error.

Date of recall: December 16, 2020

Vehicles affected

The first recall for the drive shaft covers a variety of models, 96,761 of which are affected in Canada, plus about 430,000 in the United States. All of the affected vehicles range between the 2007-15 model years:

  • 2007-14 Fit
  • 2012 Civic Hybrid
  • 2013-15 Accord
  • 2013-15 Acura ILX
  • 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid

The second recall for the software error covers 33,150 models in Canada, including another 737,233 in the U.S. These are the affected vehicles:

  • 2018-20 Accord
  • 2018-20 Accord Hybrid
  • 2019-20 Insight

Honda says it is aware of up to 350 incidents of driveshaft failures, yet with no reported crashes or injuries. The software error hasn’t led to any reported incidents.

What’s the problem?

With respect to the drive shaft issue, the problem is that the affected vehicles may not have been properly rustproofed coming out of the factory. This is the part that transfers power from the engine to the wheels, so is exposed to the elements. If it were to rust and eventually break, it could cause the vehicle to lose power or not stay in place when in park.

The software error refers to a glitch that could cause certain functions in the vehicle to stop working properly. That could include turn signals, lane-keeping assist, cruise control and hazard lights either not coming on at all, or not turning off properly. The issue may also extend to door and trunk locks as well.

What’s the fix?

Honda will inspect the driveshaft, and if found to be devoid of any rustproofing, will replace it with the rustproofed part.

Honda dealerships will be able to update the software to fix the glitch causing the malfunctions for those vehicles. Both repairs will be done free of charge.

What do you do?

Honda will notify affected owners by sometime in January with instructions on where to take their vehicles in for repair. Those wishing to learn more about their options are also being encouraged to contact their dealer for further details about next steps.
