GM EPS Recall: Your Next Steps
General Motors Co is recalling 1,015,918 trucks and SUVs in North America due to potential issues with the electric power steering on affected vehicles.
General Motors Co (GM) has issued a recall for select 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade vehicles. Due to potential issues with the electric power steering (EPS) on affected vehicles, GM has recalled over 1 million vehicles in North America, including approximately 96,000 in Canada.
According to a report by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the EPS in affected vehicles may be lost momentarily, followed by a sudden return of EPS assist. Sudden drops in EPS could increase the risk of an accident as steering may be difficult, especially at low speeds.
In the event that an EPS assist fails, drivers of affected vehicles may see an electrical problem message on the information centre display. Although there have been no reported fatalities due to GM’s EPS recall, the motor company stated 30 accidents have resulted from the defect, including two injuries. Drivers of affected vehicles should be aware that in the event of an EPS assist fail, other electrical systems in the vehicle could fail at the same time or prior to EPS failure.
General Motors Co has not yet provided a notification schedule, however once drivers of affected vehicles are notified, the manufacturer will have dealers update the recalled EPS module software free of charge. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18289.
